Book Title: Fairouz and the Arab Diaspora: Music and Identity in the UK and Qatar . Author: Dima Issa. Publisher: London: I.B. Tauris. Date of Publication: 2023. Pages: 232.
The article examines the relationship between discourse and the ongoing war in Sudan, which began on 15 April 2023, between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The article employs digital ethnography as a tool for data collection and description in conjunction with critical discourse analysis. It finds that discourse surrounding the April War is of a binary nature and shares a reciprocal relationship with the war itself. This relationship is rooted in the instrumentalization of factors such as cultural diversity, linguistic plurality, and ethnic distinctions in Sudan toward achieving military objectives – while disregarding the psychological and social impacts of mobilization strategies.
The history of anti-colonial activism in Egypt during the first quarter of the twentieth century often focuses on developments within the territorial bounda-ries of the modern Egyptian state. However, there was a significant cohort of Egyptian activists who opposed British occupation while residing abroad in cities such as Paris, London, Geneva, Berlin, Beirut, and Istanbul. This article examines these groups, particularly those based in Berlin in the period leading up to the 1919 Revolution, highlighting their crucial role in sparking the up-rising. Following a review of the literature on anti-colonial activism in Egypt and the proposal of a new framework for understanding its transnational and diasporic dimensions, the article reconsiders the activities of these nationalist groups and their political engagements.
This study investigates how the Zionist movement and Israel managed to enlist approximately 26,700 troops from abroad. They belonged to two groups: the first, called “overseas conscripts” (Gahal) and numbering more than 22.000, were Jews in Eastern Europe who had survived the Holocaust. The second group, called “overseas volunteers” (Mahal) and numbering around 4,000, came primarily from the United States, South Africa, Britain, Canada, and some other states. This article examines the critically important role played by the "Gahal" soldiers and "Mahal" volunteers in the 1948 war, boosting the Israeli army’s numbers and significantly increasing its qualitative power. They provided the army with the experts, consultants, and professional soldiers whom it desperately needed, which had a major impact on the course and outcomes of the war.
